The Wilderness Guide is a central part of the group's experience, and so we take seriously our role to find solid young people who possess Christian integrity, a loving heart for young people, proven leadership skills, maturity in decision-making, and backcountry skills and experience. Guide ages typically range from 21 to 28 years of age with a few exceptions over the years.
Each trip maintains a staff to camper ratio of at least 1:6, and in some cases that ratio is 1:3. Because group sizes are 12 or fewer, there are no formal tenting assignments. Instead, care is taken to create a short term community which can be open with each other and provide support for each of the members.
Guides are some of our highest trained staff. They receive training in Leadership and Judgement, Group Formation and Facilitation, Dealing with Challenging Behaviors, Canoe Instruction and Rescue, Driver Training, Risk Management and Evacuations, and more. At least one staff person trained in Wilderness First Aid will accompany each trip, and each water trip will include at least one lifeguard. |
