Meals and Menus

Nutrition is important -- we do our best to plan meals that are tasty and provide energy and nutrition for your son or daughter.  Packing food for a trip is complex and depends greatly on such factors as accessibility to vehicles and coolers, perishability, and method of travel.  For instance, a lunch from a vehicle can be kept cool, but generally little time will go into preparing it.  A dinner on the trail, on the other hand, generally cannot have perishables and needs to be light in water weight, so time and water will both be required for its preparation.
Many young people are used to being selective about their food and eating whenever and whatever they please.   We do not always have those luxuries on a trip, but we do take your son/daughter’s nutrition seriously because of health concerns and the amount of sustained physical activity.  At the end of the day, the campers need to have protein to rebuild muscle, fats and sugars to refuel their engines, salts to replenish electrolytes, and more water than most people imagine.
We begin packing food at least a week before a trip begins.  If your son or daughter has preferential or dietary needs, please let us know two weeks in advance of the trip so we can fully take those needs into account when planning the menu.  We have attached a sample menu so you can see the types of food typically provided on a trip.  This should not be confused with the menus for this upcoming expedition season.  Those will not be finalized until two weeks in advance of the trip itself.
