The Christ-centered ministries of Spruce Lake Retreat have grown in scope and impact since 1963 when God's ministry here began. Over 26,000 guests of all ages come each year to our beautiful Pocono Mountain setting. We have seen significant growth in virtually all areas.

The "New Horizons" capital campaign was established to address the needs exposed by (1) aging or inadequate buildings and (2) increased guest demand. Spruce Lodge, for example, is one of our oldest and most heavily used buildings, yet we serve approximately 100,000 meals in the same kitchen and dining room that we started with 46 years ago!

site overview

We have made huge strides in 2008, completing many key elements of the "New Horizons" campaign! All these changes to our infrastructure are vital for keeping Spruce Lake viable for another 40 years. Thanks to the help of many people, financially and with donated labor, we find great satisfaction is what was accomplished! Here's the list:

  • The improved, regraded two-way entrance drive was the first job to be completed.
  • Upgraded electrical service was installed in our Family Campground to each nightly and seasonal site.
  • The large new parking lot and the new perimeter driveway to take traffic away from the center of camp have both been completed as of Fall, 2008. Both are ready for guest use! We have not, however, done the final paving which will be finished as God continues to provide further funds.
  • We've improved our utility infrastructure and installed air-conditioning in major meeting rooms.

  • A New Nature Center. This project is a miracle, really, performed by volunteer craftspeople from January, 2008, through Spring, 2009! Expenses for building this lovely new educational facility have been minimal; most work and many supplies were donated. It's nearly complete now, with just a few jobs left to do ... we need to finish the railing along the wheelchair accessible path, install the cabinets and shelves, tweak the heating system and such like. If you are visiting Spruce Lake, ask us for a personal or group tour!

  • Brand new outdoor basketball and tennis courts, plus a lovely new miniature golf course, were completed in 2008!

  • Expansion of the wastewater area was begun in 2008 and will be finished during 2009.
  • OUR DREAM ... So much has been accomplished that now, we can look with new eyes toward our ultimate dream, our new Hospitality Center! We, of course, do not know what 2009 will hold, as the economic downturn affects all of us in one way or another. However, God transforms lives through the ministries of Spruce Lake, and so we are trusting him to provide for our needs in his good time. We'll proceed with the projected Hospitality Center as continued funding comes in.

We have made efforts to create a building that's as cost-effective as possible. The revised drawings shown here reinterpret its look and provide cost savings with, for example, only three floors instead of the original five.

The current economic times are difficult for many, but God may be calling for even greater generosity for those things which are most important. Consider how Spruce Lake may have made a positive difference in your life, and how you could be involved as we look forward to the new Hospitality Center becoming reality!
