- Be qualified for the positions you are seeking.
- Initiate the process by submitting references and an application in good time.
- Be available for a personal interview and provide permission for us to do appropriate background checks.
Summer Staff will have:
- Opportunity to develop a more intimate relationship with God.
- A variety of work activities which may include kitchen, dish room, housekeeping, maintenance and programming
- Opportunity to be part of a positive team atmosphere as we work and play together.
- A small accountability group.
- Summer staff worship experiences.
- Opportunity to build new friendships through social interaction with other staff.
Summer Staff will be able to:
- Discover themselves - strengths, weaknesses, gifts, abilities and passions for ministry and life choices.
- Learn to value all aspects of ministry, including those that don't generally receive recognition.
- Learn the importance of rest and balance.
- Participate in scheduled times of refreshment, relaxation and renewal, including weekly worship times.
- Work hard and have fun.
How to apply:
Most of our hires happen between the months of January and April, but leadership hires are done in the fall, if possible. The earlier you apply, the more positions will be open to you.
- Complete the summer staff application, either online or on paper.
- For online applications, be sure to select the submit button, and that the application is complete.
- For printable pdf applications - when completed, mail them to: Attention Eric Horst, Spruce Lake Retreat, RR#1 Box 605, Canadensis PA 18325.
- Contact those whom you would like to be your references (see criteria on the application) and ask permission to use them as references. Send the reference form to four different references.
- For online references, you may use the reference sender feature and be sure e-mail addresses are correct. Because of spam, we recommend that you follow up with each reference to make sure the reference link was received.
- For printable pdf references, you may print the reference forms and provide it to your references with a Spruce Lake Retreat addressed envelope and a first class stamp.
- Wait. It takes anywhere from 2-4 weeks for references to be returned and all the materials to be reviewed.
- Within 3-4 weeks we will contact you either about an interview or to decline. If you do not hear from us within 3-4 weeks, please contact us again to see where the process is. That’s it ... we can’t wait to hear from you!
Summer Positions at Retreat Center include:
Teacher

Develop and lead children’s lessons during morning teaching times
- Lead children’s church on Sunday mornings.
- Some staff will also be teacher assistants, helping in classes and taking on the teacher role when a primary teacher is unavailable.
- Teachers will also do some General Assistant work.
General Assistant: Will work in several but probably not all of the following areas:
- Programming
· Develop and lead evening and late-night activities for children of all ages
· Run family-friendly activities including carnivals, games and tournaments
- Food Service
· Food preparation assistant
· Dishwasher
· Dining room host
- Housekeeping
· Clean rooms and public meeting areas
· Set up/tear down meeting rooms iv. Maintenance
· Lawn care
· Painting
· Basic maintenance, dependent on skill level
- Lifeguard
· Watch over pool and/or paddleboats as scheduled
· Pool cleaning and maintenance, including pool chairs and bathrooms
· Have current certification or complete the American Red Cross Training Course held at Spruce Lake.
- Front Office
· Answer phones
· Guest Services
· General office work
- Snack Shop
· Food preparation
· Customer service
· Cash register
· Cleaning kitchen and dining areas
- Gift Shop
· Cash register/end of day balance procedures
· Customer service
· Stock/restock shelves
· Clean store
Leadership Team: In addition to working in the above positions:
- Relate to and serve the summer staff by encouraging, challenging and loving them.
- Look out for any issues that come up and help the summer staff work through them.
- Be a liaison as needed between summer staff and SLR leaders.
- Work with the program manager to brainstorm creative ideas for fun family activities and games.
- Help plan and run “Family Time” (summer staff worship/bonding experience).
- Meet regularly to process schedules and issues and pass on changes to other staff.
Staff Wages
Modest weekly salary potentially ranging from $90 - $300 per week, with all lodging and meals provided. The summer staff wage works like this:
• Starting wage range (factors in) - $90 - $210/wk
(factoring in age, skills, experience, certification, etc.)
• Staff Assistance Program (SAP) - staff-raised - $50/wk. max
• SLR SAP match (dollar for dollar of the amount raised) - $50/wk. max. |
